An analysis of any statistics always helps to give a fuller picture and, re the ongoing Ruddy Duck poll, it appears to reveal that the apparent current apathy may be less surprising than at first glance : only 47 members having cast their vote by c.6.30 this evening, Wed 14th March.......out of a total membership of 268.

The following may be of interest :

Although a number of our members have reached 1000+ posts, it looks as if we can discount the zero/virtually zero posting activity of at least 100 members.....with their following posting
history, and whose apparent apathy is not restricted to this particular poll vote but has been a constant trait throughout their membership :

a. those who have NEVER posted............: 80
b. those who have only ever posted once : 15
c. those who have only ever posted twice : 10
= total of 105 members out of a total membership of 268.....= 39.20%.
....and a large number of "zeros" refer to members who joined several years ago.

So, it looks as if some 40% of our membership are hardly, if ever, interested for one reason or another in posting anything (or perhaps even able to post anything) including re a Ruddy Duck poll.

On the other hand, it makes you wonder what percentage of our membership are hardly, if ever, interested for one reason or another in reading (or even able to log on and read) any LBC posts or threads, including THIS one. ???
Perhaps in the main they didn't join LBC for the website but for other, perfectly, valid reasons. After all, it may also be that a number of our members don't have a computer.

Freddy, excuse my ignorance of Club statistics but is the 268 the total Club membership or the Forum membership. Presumably all Forum members have or have had a computer or they wouldn't have registered?

Your point about being computer literate and LBC registration : it sounds logical, but......

Some computer literate relatives sign on for new members. I know......my son registered me way back in 2006, as I had NEVER touched a computer, but 'wanted to learn'. I hope I've made some progress since then.

This is getting a bit off topic, but Freddy's reply is quite interesting;

LBC Forum Membership is ONLY open to Bird Club members (This was changed some years back at the request of members at an AGM).

All new members who complete an LBC membership form and include an email address automatically get added to the LBC Forum.

Many LBC members who get Forum Membership have never activated their forum membership account and have never posted a topic.

The present LBC Membership stands at 338 members (although this total includes a number of members who are not paid up for 2012).

I'm sure the 150 or so Ruddy ducks we have here in the UK would not make any difference to the population of the whitehead duck going down .
To wipe them out is an injustice not just to them but to the many people that will never get the chance to EVER see them .

As a photographer all wild life is great to see and photograph,we should not be wiping a species out more so when there are so few of them, I wonder what will be next ?
The RSPB should take down there "Nature's voice" bit as they don't seem to be talking very loud .
Perhaps we should report RUDDY Ducks all over the place - every pond, stream, and river they may just run out of money trying to track them down.
Ps I saw 4 pair on Louth canal yesterday 2 on the river withern and 6 on the wash .

There was a pair of RDs on chapel pit today, not there 4 days ago so new in from somewhere. Wonder how long they Will last?

What about the huge pool of Mallard derivatives whose gene pool is tarnishing the wild birds !!

DEFRA/FERA have known about breeding Ruddy Ducks at Norton Disney for several years. Oliver's publication of his sighting does not in any way encourage them to come "laughing all the way to the pit bank" as you so dramatically put it.

Reading all the posts of this thread, it looks as if the much maligned Security Services of MI5 and MI6 could learn quite a lot from DEFRA/FERA/RSPB, their field operatives and their informant network, all of which are relentlessly pursuing the " villainous " Ruddy Duck.

Unfortunately this is understandably a contentious subject, after all the ruddy duck is a super looking bird and I always enjoy seeing them but it has to be admitted that Spain's White Headed Ducks are rare and threatened by the ruddy duck. With that in mind I must be FOR the cull as I would't like to see yet another species die out in today's world of diminishing species. However, in the UK we do seem to be getting rid of these ruddys quite successfully but I am wondering if it's worth it if the rest of Europe are not also pulling their weight.
The White Headed Ducks are doomed anyway if Europe doesn't eradicate them. Does anyone know how well the cull is going on in the rest of Europe? I will add that I am pleased it's not me that has to pull the trigger on a ruddy.
