650 jays over hunstanton today, never known such an influx. from a distance the wing shape and flight pattern can easily be confused with a nutcracker, we must be due for one.worth a close look, you never know [-o< [-o<

That's a huge number, Terry!....and, apparently, another c.200 over Sidestrand, near Cromer. Let's hope our acorn (plus beechmast and nut) crop is up to the challenge.

Unfortunately it has been a very bad year for acorns in England and large parts of western Europe due in part to the appalling spring weather. Beech mast and walnuts are also extremely scarce while any hazelnuts have already been taken by Grey Squirrels. However, I have just returned from Warsaw, Poland where there is a bumper crop of acorns and apples are lying 2 deep under every tree.

Eleven flew out of the scrub behind Pleasure Island Cleethorpes early morning, also 9 flew over me down South Sea Lane Humberston mid morn, also a single at Cleethorpes Country Park which is a new patch tick, 23 years i've waited for that! ( + 2 Water Rail fresh in there, Kingfisher, and a Grey Wag ).

Minimum count of 49 Jays at Gib this morning. 21 appeared in the East Dunes. Further flocks of 6, 9, 15 and 28 moving through so possibly more?

Clearly movements are complicated. Late am 3 flew south down the dunes from Pyes. At about 12:45 8 flew out of the trees by the bridge at Rimac and headed high north they had presumably seen the flock of 16 coming south over Seaview at great height and turned to join them so 24 went south but over the next 2 hours singles and 2's and 3's headed back low north along the outer dune edge with 4 high over Saltfleet Haven totalling at least 12 birds. These 12 may well go back south tomorrow or the others may return north?
Plenty of birds moving over Laughton forest yesterday but only in 1's and 2's and in seemingly random directions.

Probably a total of 72 jays at Gib today, includng birds that must have roosted overnigt on site last night leaving to the north west and other migrant flocks coming in from the north, down the coast and u-turning to head north/west.
