Very sad news. I only met Alex on 4 or 5 occassions but he was a great character, always ready to stop and chat and help new people on the scene such as myself. I used to really enjoy listenening to his stories of country folk and matters.
Rest in peace Alex and God Bless.

Matthew.

RIP Alex. This is such sad news, my last memory of Alex will be at Frampton Marsh at the end of August. He gave me a lift down to the end of the road to see the Little Stint, and when I found them and pointed them out to him he was really grateful and made this relatively new birder feel proud. His passion for birds was so infectious and even though it was for only a short time I knew him my life is that little bit richer.

I count it a pleasure and an honour to have known him. One of life's real gentlemen and our world will be the poorer for his loss.

Alexs death is very sad, and a shock only sinking in a few days later, from reports coming through from Brasil,we thought he was responding to doctors instructions and on the road to recovery. He was the fittest 76 i knew, still working at the R.S.P.B and L.W.T, in 1997 setting the pace up a mountian in Turkey followed by younger men. I,ve had the great pleasure of birding with Alex around britain and overseas since the early eighties, been entertained with his stories and good humour. He loved his birding and reached his 5K species in 2011, but he was much more than a lister, he was a 5 star man and all round naturalist, he will be hugely missed by myself and his many, many friends

In the last twelve years or so birding Freiston and Frampton I had come to know Alex as a friend, generous with his time and knowledge(and stories). We had shared cars on various twitches, the last being Alex driving a car full of us to see the courser in Herefordshire, a species he had seen before, but his enthusiasm for rare birds never waned. We made it 20 minutes before it flew off high never to be seen again. Good memories of a good man. I shall miss him.

`So sorry for the news of the demise of our friend Alex.
Great chap, always helpful, we will certainly miss each others jokes and the more serious side to birding and conservation.

I've known Alex since I was a boy and can't find the words so I'll let another Lincs old boy say it for me

Tears from the depth of some divine despair
Rise in the heart, and gather in the eyes,
In looking on the happy autumn-fields,
And thinking of the days that are no more.

Alfred Tennyson

How very sad, I only met him on a couple of occasions and was blown away by his enthusiasm and willing to share his knowledge, I have very fond memories of him at Frampton showing me dragonflies. Such a warm and friendly man, what a terrible loss :(

I'd like to echo all the comments made. Alex was a real gentleman and we'll miss him terribly at Frampton.
