Waxwings - Sheffield.......Sun 18 Nov

Plenty of Waxwings have been reported in Sheffield, so I made my way this morning to the No.1 hotspot......Cemetery Avenue, arriving c.9.30.

15 Waxwings flew in at 9.45 to the delight of some 25 assembled birders, over 50% of whom were digiscoping. Cemetery Avenue off Ecclesall Road (A625) is quite narrow and leads to the large Victorian Sheffield General Cemetery with a Roman-type column grand entrance (out of curiosity, I paid a brief visit later). The Avenue is lined with some tall trees but also by a dozen Rowans with half of them still fruiting prolifically, despite the many Waxwing visits recently.

By 11.00, the flock had built up to c. 30 Waxwings, perched in one of the tall trees and flying down to the Rowan berries from time to time. A mini sideshow was provided by 4 male Bullfinches also feeding on the berries. A Jay flew along the Avenue.

I left at 11.30 for a specially planned visit to the nearby Sheffield Botanical Gardens. Highly recommended with its large collection of trees and shrubs, and clearly another example of Sheffield's Victorian wealth.

Thanks Freddy, my Daughter and Son-in-Law work at Aviva - 5 minutes walk from Cemetery Avenue and I visit every Wednesday to child sit, so I can take the lads to see rare birds. I think the weather is going to be good as well. I'll let you know if they are still there. I used to work at the University and my lunchtime runs used to take in the Botanic Gardens and Endcliffe Park so I know the area well. Sheffield is one of the greenest cities in Europe with so many parks and woods within it's boundaries - another testament to the Victorians.

8 Waxwings in a tall tree outside my Daughter's house at Greystones, Sheffield 11 today at 12.00pm.

You said your Sheffield visiting day was Wednesday....and you didn't have far to travel from your daughter's house to see them!
