"It was 20 years ago today" that the White-throated Sparrow was first found at Chapel Hill Farm! Anyone else feeling rather ancient?

I remember the occasion well Stuart!
As I recall it you were trapping Redpolls when you found this strange bird in the net?

How many people do you reckon saw the Sparrow?

Good question. I've had a look at my old records and I estimated that 3,500 observers came to see it up to January 16th, 1993, many to get it on both year lists! It stayed for another couple of months so I suspect that a total of 5,000 wouldn't be far out.

And a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker was nearby then - do they still occur Stuart

Haven't seen one in the Market Rasen area for at least 3 years, Graham.

I seem to recall a rather rapid drive from Barton to Market Rasen after the phone call (thanks) Stuart! - the back kicking chicken like feeding behaviour (the bird's not yours) also sticks in the memory --

talking of feeling ancient I was also thinking the pother day of Lesser Yellowlegs I had sen in Lincs and remembered the curtailment of my paper round one Saturday afternoon in October 1970 when I was picked up by my local mentors to see a pristine juvenile at North Killingholme pits at a time when my push bike was my main mode of transport --42 years ago is truly scary

only strange bird i have had in my net i ended up marrying, , that lasted 28 years, got rid off her and i am better now,

I got Lesser Yellowlegs at Cley last year, in the last embers of sunlight! Had just dipped on Great Snipe so it was about an 80% day-rescuer!

Thanks for jogging the memory re the 1970 Lesser Yellowlegs at North Killingholme, Graham. I can hardly believe that so much time has elapsed, as it still remains quite clear in the mind, although I must admit that I spent long periods watching it during its stay between 3rd and 30th October. Of course, there were fewer observers then and consequently fewer rarities found, so these scarcer arrivals did etch themselves strongly in the memory. You quite rightly mention the fact that the 42 ensuing years makes one feel more ancient, but after reference to my notes, I think that we can at least draw some comfort that we are still extant, as I see that at least half a dozen of our fellow observers at the time are no longer with us.
