The bird now has Line coming out of its beak so has more than likely swallowed a hook. A fisherman was showed a picture of the bird and said that the line in mouth is a 30lb pike line which means that the hook on the end is a treble. Not goo news for the Diver.

Unless mistaken, when I saw the bird it appeared at times to have line or something hanging from it's beak but on closer inspection of my pictures it turned out to be long strands of weed. Sometimes the bird would surface with this weed and other times without. So probably not all doom and gloom just yet.

A good friend of mine says its weed wrapped around fishing lt ine on his pics.

My pictures show weed just like the picture you put up Russell. But the amount of weed changes after every dive. I have some shots that show that there is line going into the mouth of the bird. The bird was continuously trying to shake off the weed and line from its bill. Plus a fisherman confirmed from pictures that it is line and there is obviously a hook on the other end otherwise it wouldn't be stuck.

We saw the Great-northern Diver late this afternoon (10th) at the steel works end of the lake where it caught a very large fish which it proceeded to swallow along with a small amount of weed which had been hanging from it's beak. It then spent some time neck stretching to force down such a large fish and preening so I think it can be presumed the bird is in fine health.

We also spoke to the water baliff, a very pleasant and amenable chap as well as some of the anglers who were more than helpful.They are doing a great job in looking after this wildlife oasis where Bittern, Osprey and Long-eared Owl have been recorded recently. We would not hesitate to visit the site again and I'm sure if other birders were to visit with a smile on their face they will be welcomed as we were.
