Found on saturday morning 26th Jan on A16 opposite Coach House Pub in Keal Cotes, ring number GR33611. Reported to BTO and sent to Predatory Bird Monitoring Scheme in Lancaster.

Hi Jayne,

Thanks for reporting this. You will get a response from the BTO in due course, but it was ringed as a chick (one of a brood of 3) at Old Leake in 2011, by Bob Sheppard. Main roads are the biggest problem for Barn Owls.

The BTO are usually pretty prompt at replying but they can only do it if the ringer has forwarded the information to them. This is particularly true of some foreign ringing schemes and I am still waiting to hear about a Dutch ringed Water Rail from September 2008! Dean, I would suggest you re-submit the Swan ring details - 2 years for a BTO ringed bird seems an exceptionally long delay.

Last time I reported a dead Barn Owl I got a response within weeks - a letter and a couple of BTO mags :)

Had a reply from BTO today;

Ringing Scheme: London Ring Number: GR33611 Species of bird: Barn Owl

This bird was ringed by A G Ball as age nestling, sex unknown on 10-Jun-2011 at Leake Fold Hill, Old Leake, Lincolnshire
OS Map reference TF4051, co-ordinates 53deg 2min N 0deg 5min E.

It was found on 26-Jan-2013 at Keal Cotes, Lincolnshire
OS Map reference TF3660, co-ordinates 53deg 7min N 0deg 2min E.
The bird was Freshly dead Road Casualty
Remarks

It was found 596 days after it was ringed, 10 km from the ringing site, direction NNW.
