Seen by us this morning but has been reported there for the last week. Go to the main hide look out over to the island. Long eared owl roosting on the island just left of the post in front of the island.

Ment to say also seen on the way Barn Owl and Short Eared Owl along Deeping Bank

The Long-eared Owl was still on the island at Deeping Lakes this morning. Reading the log book in the hide there have been 2 LEOs visible on the island as recorded by Mr Lee Evans amongst others. Today in the gloom and through rain spattered optics the owl was visible only from the wooden fence further on from the hide. From the top of the pointy stake in front of the island take a bearing of 10 o'clock for 3 metres. Choose a sunny day to see the owl well and enjoy the rest of the reserve - several pairs of Goldeneye, a pair of LBBs amongst the Black-headed gullery and a tree-creeper seen today. A newly erected Osprey nest on the island looks very enticing.

To err is human. To really louse things up takes a computer

Just to clarify re the osprey platform Hugh referred to, it was first erected in 2010 and the recent work has been to refresh it a bit and to clear some of the tree growth to make it more prominent / suitable for ospreys. Work done with help from Rutland Water team who also advised on its initial construction (work done by Dave Vandome and volunteers at Deeping Lakes).

With Rutland water only c20/25km away, Deeping Lakes is well within dispersal distance - we live in hope

Thanks for the pointers folks. I had a highly enjoyable couple of hours here today and picked up the (very well camouflaged) Long-eared Owl tucked up just up and left of the post as previously described.

It's the first time I have visited Deeping Lakes and I have to say that I was really impressed. I will definitely be keeping my fingers crossed that the Ospreys can be enticed. Either way, I'll certainly be returning in the future. Other highlights today:-

Common Buzzard x 3 (2 over reserve, 1 over fields on approach)
Sparrowhawk x 1
Kingfisher x 1
Green Woodpecker x 1
Whooper Swan x 8 (in field adjacent to reserve)
Siskin x 9
Fieldfare x 5
Redwing x 1
Pied Wagtail x 1

There was also an extremely dark Barn Owl hunting along Welland Bank about a mile or so from the reserve.
