The July issue of British Birds has a couple of articles about Natural England policies. The culling of Buzzards was stopped last year but Natural England has issued licences for the destruction of this species on a Pheasant shooting estate. So our money is being used to destroy a native species so that others can shoot a non-native species?

Also Natural England has licensed the destruction of tens of thousands of Lesser Black-backed Gulls on the Duke of Westminster's estate in Lancs again so that others can enjoy shooting birds

I can understand the vested interest of shooting estates but Natural England condoning and supporting these actions?? Am I missing something?

John

I wrote to the MP who re-directed me to DEFRA and eventually I received a very full explanation as to why it was OK to do it. The political language used was a classic bombardment of all the reasons why it is OK to sort out buzzards. It leaves you realising that you need an army on your side to overcome the establishment.

Seems to me it's all a question of money. If you have got enough (and I'm talking BIG money) then
you can override the rules and common sense so that you and your friends can enjoy the "sport"
of shooting defenceless birds for fun. Wouldn't it be good if the real bird lovers could set these
characters free on the moors (without their weapons) and have a few days shooting at them!! Might
put some sense into them if they knew what it was like to be in the firing line!!

What this government is capable of destroying should not suprise anyone.

I hadn't yet seen or read this thread when I read an article about Culling Herring Gulls. See the thread below.
