Short-toed Lark Gibraltar Point

James Siddle found a Short toed Lark this morning around 07.00 on the foreshore at Gib at TF571591. As there was a high tide roost of Knot close to the location and high tide was at 09.30 it was decided not to look for the bird until after the roost had ended. Because of the tides filling the creek the bird could only be searched for from the Seacroft golf course end. It was relocated at 12.45, feeding in shingle areas between the seaward side of the outer dunes and the the next ridge in. I saw it for about 10 minutes and put the news out on Birdguides. I tried to post on here via my phone at the same time, but after pressing submit for some technical glitch reason no post appeared!

This will be a difficult bird to locate given the extent of the terrain in the area.

The Short-toed Lark was still showing well at 15:00 in the same general area

Well done to James for finding this bird and also to Neil Drinkall for re-locating it after the tide had gone out when we had all just about given up hope! The Short-toed Lark was very mobile and elusive in the early stages but did become a little easier to view with the passing of time.
Whist looking for the lark we encountered a juvenile Black Tern resting up on the beach.

Short-toed Lark

After a long search this afternoon the bird was re-found by Garry Wright at around 14:45pm.

We managed good views and helped the two birders from Scunthorpe to see it after they had spent all day searching.

working on the beach today at gib lots of people about asking where the bird was i did not no until 12 oclock when one of the birds told me i think it russ then pointed the other birds in the area it was in i did see it myself for about five mins . this job working down on the beach as got its ups and downs where elsa can you get a good suntan and watch the birds ? as well getting payed as well for it john lusby .

Bird relocated today at 12.50 after a 2.5hr search, reasonable views obtained feeding on the shore line in the vicinity of a yellow fish box.

Also along the shore between Skegness and Gib 9 Wheatears, 3 Yellow Wagtails and a lone Golden Plover.

I took some nice photos of that approachable juv Golden Plover on Sunday but inexplicably formatted my card without taking them off first; severe senility setting in.

There are programs to recover lost files from Memory cards even after they have been formatted.

"Get Data Back" is one such program.

Cheers Rus if they were really special I would have made the effort but many of these progs do not work on Macs and there will be another GP sometime

We re-located the Short-toed Lark again yesterday afternoon, it was still in the same general area.

The lark was re-located further north today by Ed and Monica.

Coming in from the north end down SEacroft beach the bird is a short way past the Gib NNR northern boundary sign in the area near to an obviosu large pink and blu barrell.

Many waders on the estuary again this morning eg 1000 ringed plover, 3000 dunlin, 400 sanderling - at least 21 curlew sandpipers (2 adults).

No news from the lagoons today so maybe a few more curlew sands over there too.
