watching a juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper at Alkborough tonight it walked into a group of four juvenile Curlew sandpipers and it was amazing to see that it was considerably smaller than all of the Curlew Sands and only just a little bigger than a Dunlin; on looking closer one of the Curlew Sands had a yellow flag on the right tibia and a red ring on the left tibia; from a quick search of the Euro col rd site it looks like it can be attributed to Pavel Tomkovitch who I am sure most people will have heard of if they have read any papers on Siberian breeding waders; my distant digi-scoped pictures reveal 3 numbers / letters on the flag but I do not think they are good enough to identify it to an individual but we can but hope -- I have email Pavel and will see if it is indeed one of his birds; the simultaneous arrival of both species on the same day presumably points the origin of the Pec to Siberia rather than the Nearctic;
worth keeping an eye out for other colour ringed Curlew Sands in what appears to be a building influx -- also good number so juvenile Ruff on the Humber in the last few days with a peak of 66 at Alkborough, 5 Barton today and 3+ Read's Island --

not a Russian bird but probably ringed in Norway --

One of the flock of 12 juvenile Curlew Sandpipers present on the 29th was colour ringed with a yellow flag on the left leg engraved with three letters/numbers; unfortunately it was never close enough to read the combination but the combination of rings and the flag tracked it down to a ringing project operated in Norway at Makkevika (62.30N-06.02E) (Giske Ornithological Station), Giske, Møre & Romsdal, Norway. As the code could not be read it could not be tied to a specific individual and therefore ringing date but it was ringed between August 15th and 28th 2013 so its passage to Lincolnshire had been rapid. Its stay at Alkborough Flats was also quite brief as it was seen the following day but had gone by the 30th.
