all wagtails feeding on the dry Seacroft Lagoon off Seacroft Esplanade - well worth a look on the way to the lark ! - many of the albas were adult and juv white wags

1 Hobby over visitor center.
1 Juv marsh harrier from harveys hide.
1 Peregrine chasing pigeon over shovelers.

as a total novice who only sees bits of cetaceans above the water it always intrigues me to know how people can be so confident in identifying the upper 10% but I admit I know nothing about the subject!

It can be tricky, unless really close and get good views of colouration ( particularly on the flanks ) it can be hard. As a Diver, in North Sea off Lincs we regularly see stuff above & below the waterline. Most common seem to be common porpoise, but common, bottle nosed and striped dolphins have all been seen. In my, non expert, view common dolphins tend to be in larger groups where as the bottles we normally see in pods of 4 - 8. But like I say, I'm no authority.

Identification of cetaceans can be tricky,particularly the views we are likely to get on the Linc's coast but its all mainly done on shape of dorsal fin,shape of blow,if any and upperpart colouration.The best book for help is the superb,recent book by Wildguides with some excellent photos and info by Hugh Harrop et al.

According the the Lincs Wildlife Trust Newsletter, some of the Gib dolphins were breaching clear of the water. This would have aided identification.

Yes, it sounds like they were breaching clear of the water and a photo was nearly obtained !

.............and to answer Andrew's question there has not been a confirmed live common dolphin seen from Gib in the last 20 years according to the reports (we did not check any further back), but there was a dead one ashed up in July 2004.
