Each member of the current editorial and administrative team has new horizons in their sights, and so this months issue is the PENULTIMATE ISSUE OF BIRDING WORLD, with issue 324 (Volume 26, Number 12) being the FINAL ISSUE

For someone who has subscibed to this magazine for 20 out of its 27 years of existence, this is going to leave a gaping hole in my monthly dose of birdy reading and learning. Birding World has been a must read with a winning format of ground-breaking identification issues, taxonomic developments of European and Western Palearctic birds and comprehensive British and Western Palearctic bird news sections, complemented with stunning photographs and artwork. It will be missed.

Indeed Matthew and quite a surprise to most people. Probably killed by a mix of printing and distribution costs, falling subscriber list, amazing hoe people who spent more on a single twitch claim not to be able to afford bird journals, and of course the internet where photos of all the latest birds are instantly available, some sites discuss identification issues and most of it is free. I also think there is actually less interest in in depth bird study be it identification, ecology, status etc amongst the bulk of present day bird visitors: not the right word, but birdwatchers most people are not anymore, and the term birder also referred to someone with an in depth interest and by suggestion an enquiring mind wanting to learn more about a bird or birds, again a term that does not fit. Most people now seem to have no library of bird texts, ok you can get a huge amount on the net, but also take no notes or take a visit to a bird beyond writing it into a list. Posts on this forum that go further than I saw a Blue Tit typically get no responses from the readership; is this really just apathy or a lack of real interst in birds?

The surge, then Slender billed Curlew and Birding World both gone in one week. They say these things comes in threes. It is indeed the end of an era. At least we've got the Atlas!

Arguably, depends if you saw it or not. It certainly arrived for me.

Self delusion can be very powerful Phil. You're not alone; there are many who believe in UFOs, manifestations of deities etc

I seem to recollect the Birding World editorial team were well on board with SBC at the time so I'm in good company. I will always cherish the special memory of that unique bird.
