That is good news but it is not a surprise considering all the other unauthorised re-introductions that have turned up at the location in the past 15 years or so - or am I just being cynical?

It is interesting to note that the 2013 Lincs sighting of a Purple Emperor was officially considered to be an unauthorised release. The BC Lincs Branch '2013 Butterfly and Moth Report' states accordingly that the record of this species has therefore 'not been included on the Lincolnshire data base or maps.'

Presumably the same fate awaits the 2014 record.

There have been sightings of the mighty Emperor in other sites in the county so it may be premature to write them off as releases,

Lincs Branch of Butterfly Conservation (BC) - post of 12th August 2014 :

" BC HQ has accepted as 'valid' our Scarce Tortoiseshell (or Yellow-legged Tortoiseshell)
records.

Other sightings, however, are more suspect! We know, for example, that Purple Emperor larvae were released

in Chambers Farm Wood in the Spring. The PE sightings, therefore, whilst great to see, cannot count as serious

records. The Committee also feel that the large numbers of Dark Green Fritillaries seen in Robert's Field are of

questionable origin regarding accurate and useful records."
