Great Grey Shrike at Stainby Tip 30/01/2015

I arrived at Stainby Tip today at 16.00hrs. The sun was setting fast, and I parked up at the western end - SK 90136 24517 - by the metal quarry gates on Crabtree Road. While scanning the tip a bird flew over my head and landed approx 10 metres away, it was a great grey shrike! I watched it for about 10 seconds, before it flew into the tip area and was lost from sight. Approximately 10 minutes later it reappeared in the hedgerow along the western edge of the tip, before flying over field west of the tip. By now the sun was setting fast, and I left the site in almost darkness, having not seen the bird again....

Note there is NO access to the tip. Also seen, buzzard, red kite and raven.

I went down to Holme fen and Eldernell washes today so popped in to Stainby on the way; was there about 8.30am and did a couple of circuits of the tip, but no sign of the Shrike but a few Kites around then.
The trip further south was fruitless, probably due to the bitter howling wind!
Barn Owls at Rippingale and Folkingham on the way back.

Cheers,

Oliver
