1 Shelduck
19 Gadwall
20 Tufted Duck
1 Pochard
3 Goldeneye
2 Little Grebes
8 Goosanders flew over
9 Cormorants
58 Coot
8 Black-headed Gulls
1 Green Woodpecker
c20 Fieldfares
2 Redwings
1 Mistle Thrush, singing
5 Yellowhammers

A bird scaring canon is on a rowing boat moored in the centre of the reservoir and just after we arrived it went off twice, 8 of the 9 Cormorants present flew off at the noise. For the first time that I can remember there were no Great Crested Grebes present, direct result of the bird scarer?

We found 2 Black-headed Gulls entangled in fishing line and hooks. Luckily the line was also tangled round a stout weed and I was able to catch the birds, both together on the same weed. After a bit of pecking, by the birds not me, I managed to remove the hooks, one from a leg and one from the side of the breast, disentangle the line and release the birds. They both flew off strongly, apparently little the worse for their ordeal. Why do anglers have to be so thoughtless?

With Rick Bennett.
