For comparison purposes, these are our maximum counts at Grasby this week, thus far.
We have peanuts, sunflower hearts and niger in feeders. Fat-balls, plus wild bird seed
in a feeder and on a bird table.

Wren -1
Starling - 4
Blackbird - 23
Mistle Thrush - 2, but not around feeders
Dunnock - 2
House Sparrow - 10
Tree Sparrow - 2
Chaffinch - 24
Greenfinch - 6
Goldfinch - 21
Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1
Pheasant - 2
Woodpigeon - 1
Collared Dove - 2
Magpie - 1 Not around feeders
Blue Tit - 3
Great Tit - 2
Coal Tit - 1

Numbers of Blue Tit, Great Tit, Tree Sparrow and Greenfinch are well down on previous years.
In 1996 we had over 50 Yellowhammers on the back lawn feeding on rolled oats, but have not seen
one this winter. Have also not yet seen a Siskin in the garden.

After 30+ years of garden ringing I have found that the number of birds you see at the feeders bears no resemblance to the number of individuals that are using them. I was at Kirmond Le Mire on Tuesday and handled 21 individual Blue Tits and yet the maximum seen at any one time was 4! Like Roy I have found Greenfinches at a premium and like Dean I have never seen so many Blackbirds. I ringed 32 in a Hundleby garden on January 20th!
