I’m not going to push my luck by proposing the resolution below, but I will happily second it if any member thinks it is worth putting before the 2015 annual meeting in Horncastle later this month.
“That the 2016 AGM should be held at 2pm on a Saturday.”
The traditional midweek evening kick-off discriminates against:
a) Anyone who depends on public transport
b) Students, particularly those of school age, who need to be in bed by 10.30pm or earlier
c) Anyone who dislikes driving, cycling or walking home along fast country roads after dark
d) Anyone who needs to be at home before too late because of private circumstances
e) The guest speaker who may find himself/herself faced with either a long late night journey home or the expense of overnight accommodation.
There is another consideration. The current practice of slotting the business side of the AGM after the presentation by the guest speaker means that it may not start much before 9.30 pm (or later).
There is a risk that time will run out and proceedings will have to be cut short. Furthermore, there comes a point in the evening when attendees get a bit tired.
Holding the meeting (including the guest speaker presentation) on a Saturday afternoon will allow more time for proceedings. It will thus provide an opportunity for a full, robust debate among members about the club and how it can go from strength to strength in the future.
