83 Whooper Swans (78 adults & 5 juvs) on the mere this afternoon. The resident male Mute Swan made numerous futile attempts to chase them off.

The Whooper Swans were still present at first light this morning. At about 06:30 they became very noisy, calling constantly, and at 06:37 82 of them took off and flew west leaving a lone adult behind. This bird was then subjected to much aggro by the resident male Mute Swan but seemed reluctant to leave. At 06:49 3 adult Whoopers flew back in from the west and circled round calling, the lone bird then took off and joined them and they circled round before finally departing to the west at 06:52. The male Mute seemed very chuffed with his efforts.
It seems to me that these three Whoopers had realised they had left their mate behind and had come back for him!
