Getting mix reports on the breeding status of Lincolnshire barn owls after last years bumper year...

Had one bird follow me around this morning while undertaking a breeding bird survey near Metheringham... at one point it flew over my head, briefly hovering to take a better look!

Generally it's really poor for Barn Owls this year with a complete lack of voles and field mice. Will post some figures shortly, but basically Barn Owls are not breeding at all on the low-lying fens, faring slightly better in the east and north of the county. Andrew's excellent photo is good enough to be able to age and sex this owl at Metheringham as a first year female......if it had eggs (which it would normally have by now) it would have started it's first moult, so is clearly not breeding.

For Lincolnshire this is likely to be the worst ever season.

Up until a couple of weeks ago there was a pair of barn owls near horseshoe point but now there is only one. It seems in no hurry to return to its roosting spot, it hunts and wanders, never bringing any food back and I am sure it is now a non breeding loner. Cold wet spring may be the cause of non breeding success, we shall see.

Our Tortoiseshell female cat, now almost 3 years of age, has a total tally of 39 L T field mice since mid May.
This does not constitute a bumper season, but I would not record
this as a complete lack of voles certainly not in the Fishtoft area.

I'm more concerned about our pair of H Martins. If it does not warm up before early next week
we shall be into egg hatching time and today I recorded a maximum of 56 degrees F
with squally showers more like April!

I have been observing a Barn Owl in Barton upon Humber for the past few weeks...at the moment it obviously has chicks and most evenings when I have watched it hunting, it has been bringing back between 4-7 prey items an hour to the nest site which is encouraging :-)
