An evening ringing session at Occupation Lane, Walesby wasn't too productive but a pair of Siskins were caught with the female having a noticeable brood patch (BP3 for ringers). I have caught recently fledged Juveniles there before but this is hard evidence they are breeding in the Willingham Forest area. A flyover Hobby was good.

Presumably hard evidence Stuart but Siskins have been arriving at several sites coastal, inland and along the Humber in recent days after a lack of early year records; at Laughton there were at least 3 pairs in display in May but failed to find any juvs; the only breeding records I have confirmed suggest that young fledge in early to mid April though I guess a second brood is possible? do they ever move breeding sites between broods?

Graham,
Nest Records show that Siskins often have a second brood in June/July but I don't know whether they move sites between broods - I think it would be quite difficult to confirm.

Siskins are being reported at several locations in England where not normally expected and it is assumed that it is due to a pine cone crop failure in northern England and Scotland...........the complete opposite of last year when a record cone crop meant that Scottish birds stayed in Scotland and did not move south. One was reported on a feeder in Boothby Pagnell last week.

A single Siskin over my Grimsby garden (next to Weelsby Woods) mid-morning was undoubtedly a bird on the move.
