Reported: Black Stork over North Cockerington

Phone call received from Ali Brown and Chris Manning describing an adult Black Stork circling northeast of North Cockerington - approx grid reference TF 381 920 at 13:03hrs on 11/08/2015.

Additional NOTE: The bird flew off eastward, towards the coast....

Only trying to share info from BirdGuides so not my report. Chris Heaton reported it going NW at Europarc, Grimsby at 14.23 (as possible).

It landed near S Somercoates for 10 mins at 15:30 then flew low N towards Conisholme

John Clarkson and I responded to the initial report by going to North Cockerington at 1.30. When we heard it had flown east John phoned Barry Clarkson who had just had it circling over Sea View at Saltfleetby Dunes from where it headed north west. We drove down to Howdales and stopped to scan from near Skidbrooke Church. I picked it up about 200m high to the north around South Somercotes where it circled for about 10 minutes around 2.30. It appeared to come down near South Somercotes and after some searching we relocated it on the ground at TF418942 just after 3pm. It was a juv with rings on which couldn't be read through bins but JRC got photos so we should be able to confirm later if it is the Spurn bird. After watching for 5 mins or so it flew off low towards Conisholme around grid square TF4095 where it may well have come down again.

I suspect this was a separate bird to those reported this afternoon at Gib Point and Grimsby making 3 in total!

The Spurn bird is FO5R. Not certain but your photo could be FO5R or CO5R? Surely it must be the same, does anyone know if it has been at Spurn today, it is not on Bird Guides?

The Loch of Strathbeg bird is F05P so I guess the ring series is F05* which would suggest ours is the Spurn F05R bird which would make sense. The question is Mr Bond "where is Q?" Spurn blog indicates the bird was ringed in northern France. Has anyone heard of a more specific location and is Q from the same nest as P and R which would seem logical. Published information on the web from eastern europe suggests an average of 3.26 fledglings per nest.

Further details from Barry Clarkson...

The circumstance of events at Saltfleet Haven - The juv Black Stork drifted in from NW (Not going over Paradise Pools) it then circled over Saltfleet village at 13:40, then circled back North West. It dropped behind trees and was lost, it was searched for but not relocated.

First seen by Keith Robinson from Cov Res at 11:45 then by Ali Brown and Chris Manning at N Cockerington at 13:00 then at Saltfleet by Barry Clarkson 13:40 then by me an Phil in flight c 14:00 and on the ground at South Somercotes at 14:30 before flying off very low towards Conisholme. It is clearly highly mobile but there's good open countryside and Cov Res might be a good vantage point tomorrow.

The Spurn/now presumed Lincs bird was ringed as a nestling in a forest near Bossus-les-Rumigny, Ardennes on 3rd June 2015

Cheers Chris, thats ironic, I drove within 25 miles of the nest 5 weeks ago today on my way to Italy on 6th July. its possible it was still in the nest at that point as the mean fledging date in Greece is 16th July.

Sad news on Twitter via Lee Evans, Black Stork F05R died on migration near Madrid on 20/10/15.
