Cetti's Warbler (possibly 2, call heard at two locations about half mile apart, but seen at site closest to the old station building)

Barn swallow, is that just a swallow which is is the most common or am I misinformed. Only asking as I'm eager to learn

Barn Swallow is the full name for Hirundo rustica, our common Swallow.

You're not misinformed. In 2012 Gill and Donker/IOC decided to create international English names for species and created such daft names as Lapland Longspur, Eurasian Tree Sparrow and Western Jackdaw. Am I wrong in thinking that, unless there is any danger of ambiguity, we should stick to the names that appear in most Field Guides. At least us old ones know what you've seen!

Just checked my Collins Bird Guide and it uses Barn Swallow, so Barn Swallow it is Stuart

Thanks, Nick. My Peterson, Mountfort etc. says Swallow but it was reprinted in 1979!! Must be an age thing!

I very rarely use the name Barn Swallow in reports I post, but as I had seen a suggestion of a Red Rumped Swallow on the Brayford, which is a straight flight to Washingborough, I thought it best to be clear and formal in the report.

I only knew of the Barn Swallow name, from looking up details in my Johnson and Collins when I started birding again a few years back.
