The Lincolnshire Bird Club

Whilst playing in a late evening golf match at Market Rasen I was surprised to hear and then see at least 30 Crossbills apparently coming into roost at the centre of the Course. Also at least 9 Mistle Thrushes blogging about and 4 Siskins in the conifers.

I was surprised to find the Crossbill info. on Roger Parsons Wildlife Bulletin which is extracted from Birdguides. I didn't tell anyone or Birdguides, just this Forum - who is forwarding my sightings and more importantly, why?

I assume Birdguides and other bird info providers check these sites and publish the bits they think may be of interest to their readers.

It's thinking like that Stuart that led a number of people to vote yesterday with their own pens not the provided pencil!!

Thanks John and James - I bet a lot of them wished they had used the pencil provided - the protection provided by the EU legislation to birds and their habitat may disappear - c'est la vie!

I can understand why Stuart might feel slightly ripped off if his posts are 'lifted' and duplicated elsewhere.

But is not the case that all 'rare bird news' items go on to Twitter as a matter of course for the purpose of disseminating the news as widely as possible to other birders?

Once a report is posted to a publicly accessible online site, it probably becomes fair game for anyone to take advantage of it - ethically or otherwise.

Re the referendum outcome, I share Stuart's concerns about the potentially adverse impact on birds and their habitats once they are no longer protected by EU directives.

It probably needs organisations such as wildlife trusts and clubs such as LBC to do the best they can to ensure that birds do not lose out. The trouble, in our case, is that we are solely a recording organisation with no remit in our constitution to do any lobbying activity.

Sadly, the RSPB punches well below its weight and seems to have little or no no clout in Government policy making. On the plus side, Natural England and possibly DEFRA doubtless do some good work behind the scenes.

I am not aware of a single MP who will speak up for birds in the 'Commons (though I stand to be corrected on this).

the info stealing usually on twitter is why i no longer post my info, it has ruined this forum.

I have no problems with sharing information and I obviously didn't make my position clear. The person who forwarded the information to Bird Guides is assuming that my identification skills are up to speed and is prepared to circulate the report which has not been verified by themselves - something I would not do.

No one forwards your information to these services....

It is gathered (along with data from 100's of other online sites) by employees of the birdnews services and forwarded on to their membership. Once your data is on the LBC Forum it is open access, available to anyone.

If you don't want others to know what you have seen, but still want it to appear in the LBC annual report, then forward direct to one of the county recorders...

Thank you Andrew for your answer - succinct as ever. You have clarified the points I have made and I will continue to submit my sightings to the LBC Forum - something a lot of members have stopped doing!

But Terry has a point.

Maybe he prefers his own posts not to be shared because he would like them to be exclusive to LBC. It is his prerogative, surely, to decide whether or not the information he provides is shared.

Is it right that the sightings posted on this and similar sites is 'lifted' for free by the commercial birdguides organisations - then sold on to their members for a fee?

Is that ethical?

In an ideal world, the birdguides organisations should acknowledge the source from which they have 'nicked' a piece of info - and pay a fee to LBC who could then pass on a percentage to whoever posted the 'find'.

However, this is totally unrealistic so it's not going to happen.

In the case of Stuart's crossbills, I wonder if whichever site(s) poached his report would have done so, if he had included an addendum : "Copyright Stuart Britton and Lincolnshire Bird Club".

with me it is simple i do not like profiling where companies take your info then sell it in for profit then bombard me with adverts for items they think i might need. simple as that. terry whalin
