Shearmans Wath, 16th July 1545-1645hrs

An unexpected addition to the Wader list on my patch this afternoon in the form of an adult Pectoral Sandpiper. It was found within a flock of Lapwing on a scrape close to the R. Bain. It was observed for about an hour and I called up Russ Telfer who kindly came and confirmed the ID and took some record images.

Other Species around were:-

Shelduck, pair with 5 juvs
Shoveler, duck
Mallard, 2 ducks with a crèche of c12 ducklings
Lapwing,64
Green Sandpiper,5
Snipe,1
Oystercatcher,9
Starling,35
Magpie,6
Yellow Wagtail,2
Pied Wagtail,4

Still present 5pm Sunday, nice one Mike. Also 1 Common Sand, 2 Green Sand and 1 Greenshank. Birdtracked.

Do we have a date for the last confirmed sighting of this bird - and does anyone have a photo of it?

"08.37 22/07/16 - still on pond at West Ashby on left of track by the River Bain at Sherman's Wath at c. TF 251719"

No photo of the West Ashby bird has been posted on BirdGuides.

Saturday 23rd July

Bird was still present and viewed by myself this afternoon and yes, Roy, there is a photo of it. Please note that this is a private site and cattle, including a bull, are present! The number of temporary pools and scrapes are rapidly diminishing owing to the dry, warm week.

Freddy, please note that Spotted Flycatchers have returned to Baumber again this year and have been observed both in the churchyard and a private garden where I have located a nest with what I assume is a second clutch. I have visited the Trinity/Medical centre in Horncastle a couple of times but as yet, have not connected with any Spotflys, but will keep trying.

Many thanks for the Spotted Flycatcher info. The Baumber churchyard and nearby hedges/trees are certainly favourite haunts.

I have seen the bird but was not able to obtain a photo which would be useful to accompany the submission to the LBC Rarities Committee.

Roy, happy to send JC a copy of photo. As this is a private site I will only post a pic on the forum with the landowners consent.

The last rare wader at this site was the R-N Phalarope, when it first arrived the owners very kindly allowed access to those that had the decency to ask. But after 2 days the cattle had to go back in and so access had to be restricted. Yet still people ignored this and trespassed into an enclosed private field full of cattle, calves and a bull ! This time the owners, quite rightly do not wish for a repeat of this dangerous and irresponsible action.

I fully understand the situation with regard to the site. Certainly nobody was entering the cattle field
for the Pectoral Sandpiper at the time we were.
