Nick Tribe and I spent the week birding on the coast west of Faro and a day on the Bustard plains north of Castro Verde
Species seen included Great Bustard, Black Bellied Sandgrouse, Calandra Lark, Iberian Shrike, Little Bittern,
Glossy Ibis, White Stork, Spoonbill, Great white Egret, Griffon Vulture, Booted Eagle, Goshawk, Spectacled Warbler,
Red Crested Pochard, Swamphen, Subalpine Warbler, Kentish Plover etc. also 7 species of odonata, .
Talking to a local birder who worked as a raptor migration watcher for the wind turbines at Sagres which were stopped when a passage of raptors came through, he recorded 942 Griffon Vultures over on the 15th
The week was dry mostly strong sunshine with temperatures of 22 to 24 oc.

regards John

Well done John,

Forgot to post a report on here, as I was also in the Algarve between 12-24 Sept.

Not too much to top what has been seen, but trouncing about in some scrub behind the villa (vale do lobo/vale de garrao area) I flushed an Eagle Owl, with plenty of Azure-winged Magpies and Hoopoe around, also one Black Stork over with a flock of Whites.
At quinta do lago pool, there was 10+ Purple swamp hen, black headed weaver and Gloosy Ibis, also Mediterranean Chameleon (incl 3 newly hatched juvs)

One trip was taken to the Sagres area with Peter Dedicoat and June Taylor, who are locally based guides (with their own vehicle) (check out algarvebirders.com and jupiterbirding.blogspot.co.uk) Where we had Egyptian Vulture, Booted Eagle, Short toed Eagle and Egyptian Mongoose. A visit to Salgados on the way back saw Osprey, Gtr Flamingo and 100's Glossy Ibis.

Cheers, George.

Hello George
There were c 500 Glossy ibis at Salgados including at least 11 with colour rings (we managed to read 5)
2 Ospreys and 1 spotted crake several Flamingos 2 colour rings read, and Spoonbills 3 colour rings read
lots of wildfowl and gulls and a selection of waders, Little Owl , Azure Magpies Subalpine Warbler, Wheatears,
Iberian Shrike, Iberian Green Woodpecker Black Winged Kite, etc in abandoned farmland adjacent.
Walked the San Lorenquo trail via the Quinta de Lago lake and searched for Chameleons without success
but good for birding especially the lake, and nearby salt lakes and saltmarsh

regards John
