21 Waxwings feeding on Rowan tree by little car park off Baggholme road, Lincoln

Still present to 3.15 pm at least. They tend to perch up on Croft Street next to the Community Centre but then drop onto the single Rowan tree in the Courtyard behind the flats halfway up Baggeholme Road. It always amazes me how they find such locations. I doubt that there will be enough berries left to hold them beyond tomorrow.

These birds today were using the same trees as when Andrew Vaughan found them on February 8th 2013. Amazing who time flies as I would have bet money on them being present just a couple of years ago

At least 20 present feeding on ornamental rowan at entrance to Allenby Road Industrial Estate, Lincoln at 13.40 today (4th Jan). Almost viewable from my office window!

Thanks for the lead, Brian. I watched the c.20 Waxwings in bright sunshine from 2.30-2.50 this afternoon (Wed) with 2 other birders. The birds were perching in a tall tree on the busy main road itself, opposite the Allenby Road Industrial Estate entrance, and coming down to a small Rowan tree on the roadside.

Along with several other birders I had been to the Baggholme Road stakeout mid-morning but the favoured Rowan there was virtually berry-less and I had no luck there or in the immediate area. (They had been reported there earlier in the day). I noticed a large Cotoneaster tree covered in masses of red berries on Croft Street at the bottom of Baggholme Road. It is worth a future check once all the Rowan berries in the area have gone.

On my way home to BBH after the Allenby Road Industrial Estate visit, I called in at several previous favourite (2010/11 and 2012/13) sites including :
Proctors Road (off the Outer Circle Road) - plenty of Cotoneaster berries there
McDonald's Car Park, Outer Circle Road - no Rowan berries seen
the Deacon Road site ( rear of Tesco's/opposite UPS) where 40-60+ Waxwings were regular during the 2010/11 irruption). All the Cotoneaster trees there have gone and a large new building fills the site.

The two (famous) Rowans on Tentercroft Street have also gone as a result of the construction of the cross-Lincoln road.

Once the Lincoln Rowans are depleted of berries, the Waxwings will start on the Cotoneasters et al.

24 Waxwings opp the Allenby Road Industrial Estate entrance (in tall poplar tree) 3.15pm-3.45pm when they flew towards Monks Road.

Still there at 11am. Food supply won't last long. They are feeding rapidly when on the rowan, but are easily disturbed and fly to top of nearby tree or house roof behind adjacent fence.

10 Waxwings still present over lunchtime so presumably the flock has dispersed. Showing very well coming down to the small ornamental rowan on Allenby Road by the Tower Road junction (opposite side of the road to the Allenby Road Industrial Estate entrance) and resting in the large trees here as well as drinking from guttering of adjacent houses. Of the 10 present one was an adult male whilst the others were a mix of immature male and females.

I think the rowan is sorbus vilnorinii if anyone else thinks it would be a good idea to plant one. When waxwings are in the area it seems that they find this particular rowan and strip it before moving on to other berries. In recent years they have gone for these trees at the Carlton centre, Tentercroft St. car park and a few residential sites round Lincoln. Some of these trees have been destroyed in the last 2 years.

I couldn't resist another visit to see the group, especially as they are only 15 minutes' drive away from BBH. 12 birds were still around from 11.10 to 11.30 at least, offering very close views to those of us on the pavement at the junction of Tower Road and Monks Road, as the birds came down from the Poplar tree to feast on the Rowan berries.
The still abundant berries should last the weekend.
I called in at the previous favourite Waxwing site behind Wickes on Outer Circle Road . There are still masses of Rose Hips to attract future visits from the birds.
