Sunday 9th April 1300hrs.

Red Kite being mobbed by Crow. Soared high and drifted norh towards Hemingby

L.Egret sharing the tern island with pair of BH Gulls. The gulls have been around for a few weeks and could be possibly considering a breeding attempt which would be a first for this location.

Highlight of the day,however, was finding 4 Avocets on the large scrape. A first for me at this site. I know they occur and breed downstream at Kirkby pits but this is my first record upstream in the Bain valley north of Horncastle.

Earlier this morning I had my first Swallow of the spring in the farmyard at Baumber at 0830hrs. One day later than last year!

Shouldn't there be an apostrophe in Shearman's Wath, Mike?

Well done Stuart, I'll have to concede that I shot myself in the foot there but not before I had consulted the Ordnance Survey!

There was I thinking that you might have caught too much sun yesterday on the touch line by exposing all that lily white flesh in those flash shorts. Anyway I bet you'll be well wrapped up when you hit the golf course tomorrow as we are going back to more seasonal temperatures. I expect to read reports of breeding Crossbills by tomorrow evening?

A red letter day for this site with 2 additions to the wader list

1 Bartailed Godwit (non breeding plumage)
1 Ringed Plover

Also present:-

Pr Oystercatchers
Pr Shelducks

The Terns were first noted yesterday when a Green Sandpiper was also present.

Thursday 8th June

A visit at 7pm this evening between the showers. The scrapes have been recharged due to the recent wet weather:-

Pair Avocets
2 prs Shelducks with 13 chicks
Pair Oystercatchers with 2 chicks
Peewit with chick
Pair Common Terns incubating eggs

Thursday 6th July

Returning waders:-

Male Ruff( white morph moulting) yesterday 5/7/17
65 Peewit, numbers building up past few days
29 Black Tailed Godwit ( still in breeding plumage)
1 Common sand
1 Green sand
5 Oystercatchers ( 3 adults +2 juvs )

Also:-

2 Grey Heron
Pr Shelduck +2juvs
pr Common Terns + 3 juvs whom have successfully fledged this week.

Saturday 9th September

A rather surreal afternoon of heavy showers and listening to Henry Blofelds final commentary on Test Match Special whilst watching a Greenshank on the scrape. This bird, a juvenile has been around for the last 10 days. No Green Sandpipers today and the main passage would appear to have moved on.

On Wednesday this week a juvenile Ruff was present. That was also the day that the Yellow Wagtail flock foraging amongst the cattle peaked at 26. Pied Wagtails are around in good numbers, 12 today, and Meadow Pipits have been noted this week.
