The move to a different server has been finished, with some slight DNS jumping it took less than an hour and we had very little downtime

As the LBC website uses a very old version of php, when upgrading both the forum and the Gallery had problems. The forum was easily fixed but the gallery is a major upgrade so sorry to say for a while you will get an error on the gallery.

And we'd all be EVEN happier if more birders contributed posts. Perhaps revamping of the site might provide a fresh opportunity to reconsider allowing non club members to chip in with sightings, comments etc. Might it worth be experimenting with open access for a trial period - perhaps to the end of the year?

I have to admire your persistence Jim. As I see it, the two main perks LBC Members get for their subscription is the LBC Report annually and the free access to the Forum. I for one will always be against opening the Forum to all comers - if they can't be bothered to financillay support the Club with their subscription then they shouldn't be allowed free access to the site.

The website design is ongoing (and looking very good - ETA new site approx 1 month).

The following is hopefully written in plain English....

All modern websites run on database systems and the new site will require a database to function.

The LBC Forum and the photoalbum already have stand-alone databases. For the online database to work it runs a program call PHP. Every couple of months the version of PHP gets updated to keep the site secure. The immediate problem we have is that the version of PHP that runs the photoalbum is so old that updating the PHP will stop it from running. In the next month we will either have to 'move' or 'lock' the photoalbum.

We therefore have proposed doing both e.g. moving the photoalbum to an archive site (where old images can be seen) and locking it (to stop new images being added).

We then intend to trial a new photoalbum system which links with the Flickr system...

As always any thoughts from members (particularly those who upload images) would be most welcome...
